NIT Excursion to Aurubis - The Copper Story

01.11.2011

On Friday, October 28, 2011, students of NIT Class 13, accompanied by Class 12 fellow-students and NIT staff members, embarked on their first company visit in Hamburg. With first-class organization by Andrea Siegfried and Rüdiger Naaf’s extraordinary competence as a guide, they learnt all about the story of copper at the Aurubis AG copper producing plant.

After being made aware of the fact that copper is used in almost all areas of modern life, the participants learnt about the metal’s outstanding physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. It can be recycled almost infinitely with no loss of quality, for example. Wearing protective clothing, they enjoyed the opportunity of gaining a real-life insight into the production process. The various, highly impressive stages of the production process lead to the outstandingly high quality of copper produced in Hamburg. Interesting and lively discussions went on far beyond the lunch to which everybody was invited at the end of the works visit.
